Samuel J. Call Collection, ca. 1897-1981.

The Samuel J. Call Collection consists of approximately 170 photographs, as well as photocopies of the following: newsclippings, a page from the Congressional Record, magazine articles, a letter from Dr. Samuel Call, and a letter of commendation. Photographs in the collection were taken by various photographers including Call. The photographs include images of Revenue-Cutter Service ships, whaling activities, indigenous peoples of Alaska and Siberia, villages along the coast of Alaska and the Kamchatka Peninsula, and personnel and activities aboard the Revenue Cutter "Bear." Photographs also include contemporary images of a duplicate of the medallion presented to Call after his service aboard the "Bear" and images of artifacts once belonging to Call. Other materials in the collection relate to Dr. Samuel Call's experiences in the Revenue-Cutter Service and his participation in the expedition to rescue whalers from eight stranded whaling ships caught in the ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1897.
